Curriculum overview
Kindergarten & 1st Grade
Our Kindergarten and First grade classes use Purposeful Design Language Arts for reading and writing. The students have daily Bible class using the BJU Press curriculum. They learn math from Abeka Book curriculum, while science and history are presented through BJU Press. Students in these grades have art, music, gym, and library time.
Kindergarten is a five day per week, half day program.
2nd Grade
Second graders receive instruction for reading and writing through Purposeful Design Language Arts. Their math curriculum is Abeka Books, while their Bible, history and science lessons are through BJU Press.
Second graders also have music, art, gym, and library time.
3rd Grade
Third graders receive their Bible, English, Reading, History, and Science instruction from the BJU Press Curriculum. They use the Abeka Book Curriculum for math.
Third graders learn the skill of cursive writing. They also have music, art, gym, and library time.
4th Grade
Fourth graders receive their Bible, English, Reading, History, and Science instruction from the BJU Press Curriculum. They use the Abeka Book Curriculum for Math.
Fourth graders also have music, art, gym, and library time.
5th & 6th Grades
Fifth and sixth graders are given separate grade level instruction in math (Abeka curriculum), English (BJU), and Reading (BJU). They receive combined instruction through BJU Press in History and Science. For Bible
class, students study the book of Genesis in depth.
Fifth and Sixth graders also have music, art, gym, and library classes. They have access to Chrome books to learn typing and to research for reports and projects.
7th & 8th Grades
Jr. High students are given Bible, English, Literature, and History instruction through BJU Press curriculum. They use Apologia and BJU Press alternating years for science. Their math curriculum is Abeka and they study pre-Algebra in 8th grade. They have music, art, gym, and typing class. They use Chrome books regularly for class work, research, report writing, and submission of assignments.
Jr. High students help with leadership opportunities over the HCS student body in various ways and assist with setup for events and fundraising.
